When I think about the kind of home I’d like, I inevitably must consider how I, and the society around me, have changed. I think about how many feet of wardrobe space I will need, how to create a small but cosy bedroom, how to organise an area suited to living, working and receiving a few guests. A small home makes sense if it is part of a system with easy access to transportation and shared services, from a farmers market for fresh food to spaces where children can play.
From this perspective, a well designed home represents an aesthetic of non-waste, in which limited dimensions are offset by the generous community life that exists beyond the home. In an era when the market offers repetitive and obsolete housing models, we feel an increasing need to design alternatives that generate a quality of life that is more intense, livelier and also more economical in every sense of the word.

Aldo Cibic teaches at the Polytechnic University and Domus Academy in Milan, the IUAV in Venice and Tongji University in Shanghai. He became a partner at Sottsass Associati in 1977 and in 1981 was one of the founding members of the Memphis Group collaborative, which created a historic shift in design and architecture. An innovator by calling, he adopted an ‘experimentation as practice’ approach early in his career. In 1989 he founded the Cibic & Partners studio and in 1991 launched Standard, his first self-produced collection of objects and furniture. In 2010 he started the CibicWorkshop, a design studio and centre for multidisciplinary research dedicated to alternative and sustainable projects, territorial valorisation and shaping a new cultural conscience of public space. He introduced the concept of service design, in particular with the projects The Solid Side (1995), New Stories New Design (2002), Microrealities (2004) and Rethinking Happiness (2010), presented at the Venice Architecture Biennale.
