Museums as a new form of narration
€ 3.00With the forthcoming inauguration of the Louvre Abu Dhabi, the “21st century’s first universal museum in the Arab world”, museums move into a new age, the era of investment and decentralisation beyond the West. This is an unprecedented effort to build a hub for tourism, not only in terms of the works on display but also because the museum itself has become a work of art as it has been designed by “starchitect” Jean Nouvel. But, if museums “exhibit” themselves, they simultaneously also open themselves up to criticism because of their Western origins. In fact, they are the result of a vision and a history that are typically Western, harking back to the colonialist tradition. And now museums present unprecedented problems in relation to the new relationship being built between the narration provided by the museum itself and the cultures being “exhibited”.

Jean-Loup Amselle (born in 1942) is an anthropologist and Directeur d'études at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in Paris. He is an associate member of the Laboratoire d’Anthropologie et d’Histoire de l’Institution de la Culture (LAHIC). His fields of research include ethnicity, identity, mixed races, contemporary African art, multiculturalism and post-colonialism. He is Deputy Editor of the Cahiers d’études africaines and author of a number of publications and essays in several languages. His Italian works include Logiche meticce. Antropologia dell’identità in Africa e altrove (1999), Connessioni.
