Travel: to go or to come back?
€ 3.00
Is travel escape or adventure and conquest, with inner facets too? Do people travel because of their inability to stay where they are—physically and existentially; because they hope to leave behind their unhappiness or because they are attracted to the new and unknown? One thing does not exclude the other, as an additional factor is our relationship to time, with our inclination to experience time in its fullness instead of hoping it passes, with our drive to go abroad in order to forget what we leave behind. But do we travel in order to see our identity and values confirmed and strengthened in spite of everything when we return home? Or do we travel to shed part of our identity so we become “Nobody”, like Ulysses in the Odyssey? Do we really want to go back, or don’t we sometimes wish we never returned? In his lecture, Magris will address the relationship of travel in both space and travel, and discuss travel as departure and/or return.
