Film screening: The Fountainhead
€ 3.00Directed by King Vidor. Presented by Paola Jacobbi
Inspired by the American architectural genius Frank Lloyd Wright, the 1949 film The Fountainhead is the story of Howard Roark (Gary Cooper), a talented young architect of unwavering principles who chooses to forsake fame and a renowned career, and work in obscurity, rather than ever have to compromise his creative genius. In his battle to practice modern architecture, based on progressive ideas, Roark comes up against corruption, prejudice and convention. This extraordinary black-and-white film is at once a passionate, romantic drama and also a philosophical testament to the evolution of our concepts of architecture and dwelling. The Fountainhead is the story of an incorruptible architect with innovative ideas in a society devoid of ethical and aesthetic values.
King Vidor, director, screenwriter and producer made feature films from the 1910s to the late 1950s. One of America’s greatest directors, his films ranged from social exposés to westerns and other genre movies. Nominated for five Oscars®, he was presented with an Academy Honorary Award in 1979. He won Best Director at the 1935 Venice Film Festival for The Wedding Night and the festival’s Career Golden Lion in 1982.
